It starts with the first ultrasound scan, about 6-9 weeks into your pregnancy. This helps us in confirming the baby’s heart beats, whether it is a singleton or multiple pregnancies, and estimates the date of delivery. More such scans will be done in the second and third trimesters to assess the baby’s growth and checking for any birth defects.
Two types of monitoring are carried out: Internal and External.
External monitoring is done using a special stethoscope, through which the doctor listens to the baby’s heartbeat. It has two sensors, one of which keeps track of your baby’s heart rate and the other meausres the duration of your contractions.
Internal monitoring is done during labour, only after your cervix has dilated to at least 2 cm. It measures the strength and timing of your contractions. It is more accurate than external monitoring for tracking your baby’s heart rate.
